John Howe-Wemett, CFP®, MS

Vice President—Wealth Management Advisor

As Wealth Management Advisor at Generation Capital Management, John brings a unique blend of technical expertise and emotional intelligence to his role as the firm’s lead financial planner. He holds the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation and a master’s degree in personal financial planning from Kansas State University, building on a foundation of philosophy and international studies from Nazareth University. This diverse academic background informs his ability to connect deeply with clients and approach financial planning with curiosity, empathy, and clarity.

John specializes in providing fiduciary advice in every aspect of a client’s life. He focuses on balancing financially optimal outcomes and what best represents the client’s values, goals, and relationship with money. His experience lends itself to working best with:

  • John sees himself in his hard-working, forward-thinking professional clients who want to make smart decisions with their money as they build their careers and lives. He helps cut through complexity and create financial strategies that align with both goals and values—so success feels meaningful, not just measurable.

  • With a multitude of connections in the health field, John understands the unique financial pressures that come with a career in medicine. From managing student loans to identifying risks as you build your wealth, he provides product-free financial planning tailored to the evolving needs of physicians.

  • For entrepreneurs and small business owners, John offers guidance that bridges the gap between personal and business finances. He helps clients develop strategies for compensation, tax efficiency, retirement planning, and long-term financial security—without losing sight of the bigger picture.

  • As clients approach retirement, John helps them make the most of their remaining working years. His planning focuses on income strategy, investment alignment, and reducing uncertainty, so clients can step into retirement with confidence and clarity.

  • John has spent a significant portion of his career working with retirees of all wealth levels to turn their savings into a sustainable, purpose-driven retirement. He helps manage cash flows, optimize taxes, and ensure that financial decisions support a fulfilling life—so clients can enjoy the freedom they’ve worked so hard to achieve.

A natural educator, John also teaches financial planning and personal finance as an adjunct professor at St. John Fisher University’s School of Business—extending his listen-first, teach-always mindset to the classroom.

John is actively involved in the financial planning community, serving as Vice President of the Financial Planning Association of Greater Rochester and as a member of the Estate Planning Council of Rochester. He also sits on the advisory council for the Emerging Leaders Society within the United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes, and is a member of the board of directors for Journeys of Solutions.

Since entering the financial services industry in 2011, John has helped hundreds of individuals and families nationwide align their money with their values and future goals. Before joining Generation Capital Management, he worked with clients from all walks of life at Manning & Napier and Wells Fargo Advisors.

When he’s not meeting with clients or students, John enjoys exploring Rochester’s food scene with his wife, staying active at his local community gym, discovering new scotches or bourbons, and tinkering with classic cars—including the occasional lap around Watkins Glen. Always up for good conversation, John welcomes any excuse to meet for a cup of coffee: whether it’s to swap restaurant tips, hear about wellness goals, or regale you with car stories.
